Roman North African Red Slip Fragment from the Achilles Plate

Item 6 of 7

Roman North African Red Slip Fragment from the Achilles Plate ca. 4th to 5th cent. A.D.. Thestis wanting to keep Achilles from the Trojan War, hides him in the women's quarters of King Lycomedes on the island of Skyros. Fragment renders a portion of the scene. Roman North African redware fragments come from a very interesting time when Pagan and Christian motifs where used on vessels produced for the games and other special events. A new and exciting book on the subject has just come out, Light From the Age of Augustine by John J. Herrmann, Jr. and Annewies van den Hoek. This book sheds new information on many pieces once misunderstood. Many of the fragments are referenced to the book, which we have available for $20 unsigned or $27.50 for signed. W. 2 3/4".
