Near Eastern Terracotta Strainer ca. 500 BC. This is a wonderful example of an ancient strainer or sieve in near perfect condition. The piece has a broad half circle body with two lug handles and it is perforated through the bottom half to allow the escape of either water or seeds. It is very unusual to find a utility piece such as this intact. Such a piece would have been an important component of ancient food preparation tools, either for sifting grains or for washing. This is a large and completely intact piece with no restorations, some minor degradation of the surface and earthen encrustation. 13 1/2" x 4 3/4" (34 cm x 12 cm).
