Japanese Edo Rifle Edo Period, ca. 1800 AD. This rifle has an elongated octagonal barrel with deeper rusting, especially around the firing mechanism. The rifle was probably adapted to use caps and is not a matchlock. The piece is of typical Japanese rifle form with elongated barrel and short stock. Throughout the wooden body are inlayed engraved brass plates in floral design. An engraved plate on the stock depicts a shishi. The mechanism is frozen, otherwise the rifle appears to be in generally good shape. Acquired by a US serviceman with the occupation forces just after World War II. Bamboo tamping rod. L. 51" (129.5 cm).
