Japanese Edo Wooden Head of a Bodhisattva ca. 17th-18th Century AD. A beautifully modeled head of a Japansese Bodhisattva or, in Japanese, Bosatsu. This Bodhisattva is likely Kannon (Japanese) or Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit). The piece is superbly modeled in Hinoki or cypress wood and has areas of splicing repair which is typical of the period, it also retains traces of its original lacquer coating. The head is carved as an insert which is typical of larger pieces from temples of the Edo Period. A rare example of a larger period Japanese wooden sculptural piece. A beautiful piece. H. 13 1/2" (34 cm), 21" with base.
