Artist Info (scroll down for paintings): Received Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS) in 1991 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Has painted under the instruction of artist Iosif Puchinskiy of Belarus and Scott Tallman of Chicago. Active with Plein Air Painters of Chicago (PAPC). Living and working in Chicago. Influenced by Russian impressionists, The Fauvists, German expressionists, and Chicago Modern painters. The famous words of advice by Gauguin to Paul Sérusier “How do you see these trees? Yellow, then use the most beautiful yellow on your palette,” are sounding in my head when I paint. Although I don’t fully follow Gauguin’s advice I do feel that a painting must show off its subject’s color, the colors that are not immediately seen at first observance. Black is not black, it is blue, green, violet sometimes even red. This is also not to say that my subject’s colors should be unrealistic or extreme, like the Fauves, but rather emphy to find a moderate version of Gauguin’s advice. I am also influenced by the austere landscapes of the Russian impressionists, the daring shapes produced by the deliberate brush strokes of the German expressionists and the ability of the Chicago modernists to simplify the complexities of the urban cityscape. |
