Caracalla. AE 33

Coin 183 of 376

Caracalla; 198-217 AD, Antiochia, Pisidia, c. 212-7 AD, AE 33, 28.74g. Krzyzanowska-obv. XXXIII, rev. legend of 56, type of 49. Obv: IMP CAES M AVR AN - TONINVS PIVS AVG Head laureate r. Rx: [VICT]ORIAE - AVG - VSTORV (sic) COL - ANT around, S - R across field, Victory advancing l. holding wreath and palm. An interesting reverse legend, apparently hitherto known only on a single coin in BM from the same obverse die as ours, but with variant reverse type of Victory advancing right holding trophy with both hands (Krzyzanowska pl. XXIV, XXXIII/56). The usual Victory legend on Severan large bronzes of Pisidian Antioch was VICTORIAE DDD NNN or VICT(ORIAE) DD NN or just VICT D N, indicating that respectively three, two, or only one emperor was ruling at the time..
