This book is comprised of the 12 lectures that Percy Gardner delivered in 1882 at Cambridge. His intention was to provide a guide book that would show the development of coins and how they related to other works of art. His lectures discuss a plethora of topics such as the origin of coinage, the reforms of Croesus, monetary alliances, die-cutting and coin stamping. He also delves into the advantages and disadvantages of coins for the purpose of archeological study. The art and mythology of coin-types from various periods, such as the Archaic is also discussed.
