Gordian III ; 238-244 AD, AE 32, Pisidia, Antiochia, 21.17g. Krzyzanowska obv. die VII, rev. die 27, p. 178, pl. XXXIII. Obv: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS A - VG Bust laureate, draped, cuirassed r. Rx: CAES ANTIOCH COL Emperor on horse leaping r., about to hurl spear at lion below horse; the lion leaps left, and already has a second spear lodged in breast; before lion, letters S R. Rare type: Krzyzanowska records only 14 specimens, from one obverse and three reverse dies. Dark patina with areas of chalky white. Pretty reverse type with Gordian on horseback spearing a lion. aVF
