MAGNA GRAECIA MASSIVE CAMPANIAN BAIL AMPHORA

BC. The obverse of this vase renders a female wearing a peplos (sleeveless tunic)

standing within a naiskos (small shrine). She leans on a pedestal with her left arm

while the right is held out in front of her and most likely once held a mirror. This

detail, originally painted white and applied after the firing, is no longer visible. The

reverse of the vase renders two heavily draped youths facing each other. The top and

bottom borders are done in a single wave pattern, the sides in long geometric design

and the neck of the vase in tongue pattern. There is a 23mm abrasion on the obverse

of the vase between the pedestal and the woman’s leg, otherwise this vase with its

massive size remarkably has never been broken or restored. Ex Donna Jacobs Gallery,

MEDIEVAL KNIGHT’S STEEL TASSET

, ca. 15th-16th Century AD. A nice

example of a genuine piece of late medieval knights’armour, probably from Germany.

The tasset is a contoured thigh guard that hooks into the waist armour. This particular

piece is composed of four separate lames or plates riveted together with a reinforcing

ridge around the edge. The piece then has two hinges that hook into the thigh armour.

This piece has numerous period repairs which would be typical, that is replacements

of the rivets and damaged bits of armour on the top two lames. Nonetheless it is a very

good example of genuine Medieval knight’s armor.

INDIAN BRONZE SHIVAVIRABHADRA

is unique in that most bronze representations of Shiva Virabhadra are in processional

plaque relief form, thus not sculpturaly modeled in the round. Thus the figure stands

on a multi-tiered plinth represented in manifold form of four arms holding a shield,

two swords, and a bow and arrow. The piece is missing its original mandorla plate

from the back. Overall brow to olive patination, Very good condition and rendered in

an earlier elongated style. Very rare type. H. 9 3/4” (24.8 cm)..............................1500

JAPANESE EDOWOODENHEADOFABODHISATTVA

, ca. 17th-18th Century

AD. A beautifully modeled head of a Japansese Bodhisattva or, in Japanese, Bosatsu.

is typical of the period, it also retains traces of its original lacquer coating. The head is

carved as an insert which is typical of larger pieces from temples of the Edo Period. A

rare example of a larger period Japanese wooden sculptural piece. A beautiful piece.
