Though traditionally assigned to the main Roman
series, it seems clear from their reverse type that
Hadrian’s Pegasus dupondii must in fact be the
largest denomination in his issue of orichalcum
coins struck at Rome for circulation abroad, McAlee
544-552. As McAlee quite rightly comments, “The
griffin on nos. 549 and 549A resembles Pegasus on
BMCRE 1332 and 1334” (p. 224, note 19). In RPC
3759-60 the flying griffin on these two orichalcum
asses meant for circulation abroad is actually mis-
takenly described as Pegasus
.

palm stem, a draped girl on right reaches towards

DRIANVS - AVGVS[TVS] Bust laureate right, fold
of cloak on front shoulder. Rx: COS [III] above, S C
in exergue, Galley traveling left, with seven rowers
(two of them, their heads only shown, are in a sec-
ond row) and ten oars, in stern emperor or helms-
man in arched cabin, at prow slanting mast with
furled sail at top, on side of prow small mushroom-
shaped object (anchor?). Cf. BMC, p. clxvii: “The
galleys, like the types of Neptune, look to Hadrian’s

Scarce variant with ibis on column; in BM collec-
tion only one denarius with column, ten without.
