an exceptionally rare and desirable coin. Our example is much the same as the five

coins shown in Svoronos, looking to have some circulation wear but actually just

seated l., holding cantharus and thyrsus. Rx: ΣΥΒΡΙΤΙΟΝ, Hermes standing l., holding

phiale and caduceus. Extremely rare. Exceptionally well-centered. This suffers from

the normal problem of rare issues of Crete struck with worn dies. This however is

exceptional in comparison with the examples shown in the references. EF........16000

32, October 1966, lot 131.) Obv: Facing head of king Perikle. Rx: Dynast’s name

in Lycian letters around triskeles. First portrait of living human on coin. While the

portrait staters of the Lycian dynast Perikle are well-known, this smaller denomination

of the type was previously known only in a single example, sold by MuM Basel in

1966 and subsequently published as part of the Winsemann Falghera Collection,

Glaux 3, 1989. Very rare in this small denomination, apparently only the second
