Alfen-134 (these dies). Obv: Stylized head of Herakles r., lionskin headdress rendered

in herringbone pattern; pellet on cheek. Rx: Enthroned figure l., supporting horse

on outstretched arm; trident behind, stylized palm tree before. Exceptional quality;

perhaps among the finest known. This coin is an extremely interesting type that

normally never comes in such high quality. Black patination with incredible detail.

The style is clearly imitating the coins of Alexander the Great. Mint State..........5750

Obv: C MEMMI C F Head of Ceres r., wreathed with wheat ears. Rx: C MEMMIVS

IMPERATOR Trophy; before, kneeling captive. The edge of this coin exhibits

unmistakable evidence of serration, although the last serrated coin had been struck

over a decade earlier. A cursory examination of other coins struck in 56 BC, the

year this coin was issued, reveals a handful of other examples of the same curious

phenomenon. Apparently, silver supplies that year were augmented by overstriking

earlier denarii, although in no case known to this cataloger does any remnant of the

undertype remain. Beautifully toned. VF.................................................................400
