; 449-445 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.14g. Starr issues after 449 BC.

#1. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. Rx: AΘE downwards on r.; Owl standing r., head

front, to l. olive twig with two leaves and crescent moon. From the first issue after the

Starr Groups, still showing the high relief and much of the fine style that is typical of

those earlier issues. Only the lack of the four-feather tail keeps this from fitting into

Starr’s book as Group V. Toned EF........................................................................4000

head of Athena r. Rx: AΘE downwards on r.; Owl standing r., head front, to l. olive

twig with two leaves and crescent moon. The exceptionally beautiful portrait ofAthena

makes this one of the earliest issue of the type of Athens with the crescent moon very

close to the Athenian tetradrachms in Starr’s book on early Athens. Toned EF....3750

Beautifully centered and exceptionally well struck showing virtually every dot on the

symbol below Athena’s right arm apparently unknown to Westermark. Obv: Head

of Philetairos r., wearing laurel wreath entwined with diadem. Rx: ΦIΛETAIPOY

downwards on l., Athena wearing crested helmet seated l. on throne, extending her

r. arm to crown the king’s name with a laurel wreath; her l. elbow rests on shield

ornamented with gorgoneion, and a spear emerges transversely behind her helmet;

uncertain monogram or symbol below her r. arm, bee in outer l. field, and bow in

r. field. This obverse die and symbol below Athena’s arm apparently unknown to

Westermark. The obverse die is quite similar to several others from her V.CIII - CXV

that also have bee symbol in outer left field on reverse. The symbol below Athena’s

right arm on our coin is unclear because of wear and damage: one sees crossing lines

like an X turned on its side, plus possible further forms above and below the left side

Two wrestlers engaged, ΠΟ between. Rx: Slinger, wearing short chiton, standing r.

discharging sling; triskeles of human legs before, K between legs; all within square

dotted border. This pair of dies is missing from most major collections. Only one

example has been located. This coin is extremely sharp and struck from fresh dies that,

because of the reverse die break, must have shattered very quickly creating this very
