PERGAMUM, ATTALUS I
; 241-197 BC, Tetradrachm, 16.82g. Obverse die and
symbol below Athena’s right arm apparently unknown to Westermark. Obv: Head

downwards on l., Athena wearing crested helmet seated l. on throne, extending her
r. arm to crown the king’s name with a laurel wreath; her l. elbow rests on shield
ornamented with gorgoneion, and a spear emerges transversely behind her helmet;
uncertain monogram or symbol below her r. arm, bee in outer l. field, and bow in

Westermark. The obverse die is quite similar to several others from her V.CIII - CXV

right arm on our coin is unclear because of wear and damage: one sees crossing lines
like an X turned on its side, plus possible further forms above and below the left side
of the rotated X. Good VF / Fine............................................................................495
