The normal Victory seated type shows just one of her wings, behind her back and

with its tip pointed to the ground. On our coin both wings are shown, half raised, their

tips pointing to 2-3 o’clock, and with the “shoulder” of the far wing emerging before

Victory’s face. This variant is not described in the standard catalogues or in Cathy

King’s recent quinarius book, though it is not rare on Hadrian’s silver quinarii of this

issue. King herself illustrates two such coins, and of 21 Victory seated silver quinarii

of this issue in CoinArchives Pro, ten show the single wing pointing downwards, but

eleven both wings half raised, as on our coin. Good VF........................................250

in the standard catalogues under Elagabalus, but a specimen of this coin was reported

in 1886 and misattributed to Caracalla: ASFN 1886, p. 101 = BMC p. 442, (d) = RIC-

234 = RSC-90c. Specimens known today, apart from ours and the one in the Spink

catalogue cited above: one in Vienna and one in Tom Cederlind’s stock in 2002. The

Cederlind coin is from the same dies as the Vienna specimen, and may or may not be

identical with the one in the Spink catalogue of 1997: we cannot locate our copy of

that catalogue to check. Weakly struck reverse. Virtually Mint State....................1450
